Toyota RAV4 2019 showed mouth-watering design
The RAV4 is the model that started it all in the compact crossover segment about 24 years ago, but along the way it seems to have lost its luster, becoming something of a Camry among SUVs, although it has never lost its market share.
Now, with the fifth generation of the model at the New York Auto Show, Toyota is returning to its roots with a more raw interpretation, making it the most interesting RAV4 from the mid-90s original.
Unlike German manufacturers with their annoying evolutionary design approach today, you won't mistake the new RAV4 for the current model introduced in 2013. In appearance, it is similar to the FT-AC concept from last year's exhibition in Los Angeles.
Of course, in the RAV4, most of the details are toned down for mass production, but still, the new model looks closer to the 4Runner TRD than its predecessor. And this is good. Bolder lines, sharper LED headlights, square fenders and a grille that screams right in your face make the car that much more interesting when you look at it. Not everything is perfect as the back isn't that different from the front, but you can't have everything.
The "healthy" styling theme continues in the new interior, and the only thing we saw was the steering wheel. Like most modern cars, the model is equipped with a "floating" infotainment system screen located at the top of the center console. You will also find more modern details such as a lever and modern buttons to control the air conditioner and a button to select the driving mode.
What many will really like is the new Entune 3.0 multimedia system, which now includes Apple CarPlay, as well as wireless access to Amazon Alexa and Wi-Fi connectivity. However, there is no support for Android Auto. You get a standard 7-inch touchscreen and 8-inch screen as a custom option, and Toyota is adding an all-new JBL audio system.
All RAV4s get eight airbags and standard Toyota Safety Sense (TSS). It includes a pre-collision warning system with pedestrian recognition; Dynamic radar cruise control; Lane departure warning with manual; Automatic high beam; Lane keeping assistance and traffic sign recognition.
With the release of the 5th generation RAV4, Toyota is moving from the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) C platform, which includes the Prius and C-HR, to the TNGA K version, which is shared with the Camry and Avalon. This results in some changes in proportions, as the new RAV4 has a longer wheelbase but is shorter, wider and lower.
Toyota claims the new chassis is 57% stiffer than the current version. The RAV4 is not only the first TNGA all-wheel drive model, but also the first Toyota to feature dynamic all-wheel drive, sending 50% of the torque to the rear wheels, left or right rear wheel for improved handling. This system will be available in Limited and Adventure AWD models, while lower versions will not offer this system, and the hybrid will get its own electronically powered AWD-i system.
No surprises under the hood, as Toyota long ago abandoned the use of V6s in its compact SUV class, but at the same time refuses to accept a modern turbocharger in 4-cylinder units - at least at this stage, for the RAV4. The 2019 model is equipped with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a hybrid version that combines a 2.5-liter unit with an electric motor and a CVT. Toyota has yet to announce performance data, but the hybrid is expected to be more powerful as a softer-suspension variant of the XSE Hybrid will be used.
Along with the XSE, the model will offer Limited and Adventure options. The Limited is your choice for a more luxurious look, including 19-inch wheels and chrome accents, while the Adventure will be available with an Ice Edge roof in combination with one of three colors: Midnight Black, Metallic or Blue Flame and orange interior accents . Each type will look slightly different in detail.
